By Example

My Grandma was a sweet, loving woman with a delightful giggle. She taught me a lot – by example. She always seemed to know when I was “stretching the truth”. She would have a story ready from her life — similar to the boy who cried wolf. When I couldn’t get along with my brother, she would tell me about life among her four sisters – she had examples from several age levels. Of course, the result would always be “what JESUS would say or do”. My regrets are that as I became a young adult, spending less time with her, I paid more attention to “the ways of the world”. Yes, I gossiped at work; yes, I became promiscuous; yes, my vocabulary deteriorated. I would have a “come to JESUS period” and then backslide. That happened a few times. But, as you can tell, those teachings from my Grandma

Garden Club

2 Corinthians 2:17b Common English Bible (CEB) We are speaking through Christ in the presence of God, as those who are sincere and as those who are sent from God. Grandma Chloe (pronounced “klo”) was a member of the Churches Corners Garden Club. Its members were ladies of the neighborhood who were also ladies of the Church. Depending on the week of the month that I spent with Grandma, I could attend Garden Club with her. I now believe that Grandma probably had something to do with the timing of my annual summer week-long visit. She knew that I enjoyed Garden Club. I had to wear a dress – these were refined ladies!   A neighbor would pick us up – Grandma didn’t drive a car. I’d sit in the back seat and admire Grandma and her friend – wearing light, frilly hats – and sometimes gloves! We would arrive

We Are The Aroma

2 Corinthians 2:15a NIVFor we are the sweet fragrance of Christ [which exhales] unto God. When Grandma Birdie hugged me, it was like nothing else I had ever experienced. She smelled so sweet! I didn’t want her to let go. Grandma had special talcum powder that she always used. It gave her a fragrance like none other. Sometimes I’d sneak into Grandma’s bedroom. Avoiding the squeaky floor boards, I’d step slowly across the room to her dressing table. There it was! The round box with a pattern in faded orange, light brown and white. I would put my nose up to it and inhale, ever so gently. An outer residue of the inner treasure would soothe me for a moment. I didn’t dare lift the cover. Grandma had shown me how it was on tightly to keep the powder fresh. If I tried to pull it off too quickly, all

From Life to Life

2 Corinthians 2:16b  (NRSV)…to the other a fragrance from life to life. A new perspective is “pay it forward”. Grannies have always known that the way to live is to pay it forward. From Grannie to grandchild (and other family members). At Grandma Birdie’s we always prayed at our Thanksgiving meal. As I grew to second grade or so, she would have me sing. We called it “The Thanksgiving Song” – “We gather together to ask the Lord’s Blessings               He chastens and hastens His will to make known…” A meal at Grandma Chloe’s was always opened with a prayer Usually by Grandpa. At special occasions such as Easter or Christmas, Everyone around the large table would sing “The Doxology” —                “Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow!               Praise Him all creatures here below!…”  For Thanksgiving, Grandma would ask us to sing “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come”                “Come, ye
